At my tiny Catholic primary school, one of the priests took my class on a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the Church.
My main memory of this visit was how the priest said recently, they’d run out of holy water and he’d had to make more on the fly.
What he did was get a big pot of water, put it on the stove…
And BOIL THE HELL out of it.
(I was young enough when told this that I thought it might be a joke, but still for many years was hyper aware of the potential holy nature of the water inside a kettle.)
Sometimes you have to make do. You’ve got to work with what you’ve got…
You have to accept a thing – be it holy water or be it something bigger, like your creativity – is imperfect and only approximating what it should or could be.
The creative process is full of imperfection.
You have to let your writing be bad (terrible! Totally cringe!) before it can be good.
Even when a book goes into the world, there are things you’d change. I’ve never done a reading of my work in public without editing words in my head as I said them aloud.
If you’re hosting a podcast or building a writer profile by hosting events with other writers, you have to be not-that-great at interviews before you can be good at them.
Good news: I can help.
Here’s how:
