Happy Easter!
Recycled from the ‘gram:
For me the critical component of hot cross buns is that they’re cooked with butter in a frying pan.
Having said that, I probably would just prefer a donut.
Critical Thinking
I love the idea of club for critics. Imagine doing anything. You wouldn’t want to cater for supper or send an email to the group, you’d be too afraid.
I notice pictorial representations of the idea of infinity. That sounds highfalutin and weirdly specific but here’s one:
In this case, the next logical step would be ‘Critics of Critics of Critics Club’, and so on and so on, until the end of time.
(Another pictorial representation of infinity I’ll attempt to explain:
Years ago, Toilet Duck [the cleaning product] had a label that depicted a drawing of a toilet with a bottle of Toilet Duck beside it.
The Toilet Duck on the label had a drawing of a toilet with a bottle of Toilet Duck beside it.
The Toilet duck on the label of the Toilet Duck on the label had a drawing of a toilet with a bottle of Toilet Duck beside it…. etc.)
From IRL
It’s not a secret but maybe not widely known that a couple of times a year authors Graeme Simsion and Anne Buist have a soiree at their house for authors of adult novels. Debut authors attending do a two minute reading each. It’s pretty fun but also showcases your inadequacies:
In my defense, I do have an epic TBR pile.
Carney and I took the kids to Magic Mountain during the holidays. It’s a tiny, old-school amusement park in Merimbula and the rides are pretty lame. Not lame enough for me, though.
This is probably more my ilk:
Virtuous but not ego-centric way
I’ve been using the Waking Up app. It’s about mindfulness and meditation and blah blah all that stuff and it’s excellent, even if I’m never chomping at the bit to do it.
They alternate meditations with a (short) discussion topic. It’s probably telling that my favourite discussion topic so far, was about how becoming a super spiritual person and adopting affectations like changing your name to Serendipity and giving up all your worldly possessions, could actually be a manifestation of ego, i.e. the exact opposite of what you’re attempting to do.
Anyway, here’s how it’s looked so far—I’ve got a bit to work on:
Interesting Things
I’ve been wanting to interview Kevin Wilson since forever and this week on the pod, I finally did. Probably my favourite interview. If you haven’t read The Family Fang, you absolutely have to.
The Serious Guide to Joke Writing by Sally Holloway is excellent. Ten stars. The focus is jokes, so writing short form funny things, which makes it perfect for comic and cartoon generation ideas. It would also be good for speeches.
The Heart Is a Star by Megan Rogers. Megan is part of a sponsored content segment of The First Time podcast, but I’m not paid to mention her or her book here. Girl can tell a story though! It’s a great read. Also, at the risk of further self promotion — I loved this interview with her. Introverts unite! In it she has an epic description of the editing process, which is so spot on I can’t imagine a better analogy.
Until next time,
Katherine xx
The horror tunnel one is great. Very funny.
