Seven things I made or am into…
Five cartoons
One thing on managing rejection and coping with criticism
You might know I coach writers that want to get published or are about to be published. I made this free mini ebook: How to cope with rejection, criticism and negative reviews. The feedback’s been good.
One book
The Too Tall Tales of Alma T Best is the book for children (aged 9-12) I wrote and illustrated (by ‘illustrated’ I mean ‘drew cartoons for'). It came out this month.
It’s about an unusually tall girl who hates basketball, and lives in a town attached to a sewerage farm. (The sewerage farm is not the basis for poo-jokes. I have a background as an engineer, working in sewerage and it’s based on a town that used to exist.)
One interesting thing for authors — if you write childrens books, you might know how hard it is to get publicity in Australia. I asked my (excellent) publicist if she could pitch some of my cartoons to newspapers but she said she couldn’t because the newspaper would have to pay me etc etc and she only negotiates free stuff.
Anyway, she ended up getting me to convert some of the cartoons that feature in the book into colouring-ins, which she then did manage to place in a couple of newspapers. I’m thrilled — It’s the most excited I’ve been to see my work a place.
Squeezing in an eighth thing: My most popular recent Instagram post detailing useful re-frames for writers. It includes:
Over to you —
What’s the stuff you don’t feel like doing?
Have you not-cried this week?
Did you sign up for this and forget who I am? (It’s been a minute.)
Bye for now,
Katherine
Haha, love the cartoons!
